President declares presidential election

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has signed the proclamation declaring a presidential election next year at the auspicious time of 1.28 pm today (Nov 20).

Accordingly the gazette notification announcing the presidential election will issued today.

The Election Commissioner will assign a date for handing over of nominations based on the gazette notification.


Following the completion of the particular procedure the Election Commissioner will announce the date of the presidential election.

However, election secretariat sources report that the handing over of nominations is to be held on December 4-5 and the presidential election is to be held on January 03.
